New 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' Film To Explore Familial Connections From Original Film

Themes of family have always been an important part of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. A brother and sister were victims in the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, who were killed by a sick and disturbed family of cannibals. The Sawyer family and their terrifying dynamic was a constant factor in that film's sequels, with themes of family being explored in the 2003 remake and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. According to the writer of the upcoming prequel Leatherface, those themes of family will continue, allowing us to meet never-before-seen family members that tie this film into the original.

When speaking with Bloody Disgusting, Seth M. Sherwood explained a little more about a character listed on IMDb as "Ted Hardesty," a familiar last name.

The writer revealed, "Ted Hardesty is Sally's dad. There was a later scene that went into it, but it was cut for budget reasons. I don't know if we ever hear Ted's last name in the movie as it is– but he's there briefly. I mean, Grandpa Hardesty's farm was in walking distance of the Sawyers, sooooo…"

In the original film, Sally was played by Marilyn Burns and was the only character to survive the wrath of Leatherface. She and her wheelchair-bound brother Franklin were two of the unfortunate souls to stumble across the Sawyer compound, so it's possible we'll finally mean the Sawyer's neighbors in the upcoming film.

Leatherface won't be the first prequel in the franchise, as Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning told a story set before the original film, but with a mostly-developed chainsaw-wielding killer, that film didn't go much into the character's backstory, something Sherwood aimed to change with directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo.

Considering their dark and disturbing work on Inside and Among the Living, we should expect a much more twisted film than the studio pictures we've grown accustomed to seeing the character in.

There's no release date yet announced, as the film as gone through multiple edits and reshoots, but we can't wait to see what direction Leatherface takes.
