Tomb Raider Reboot To Begin Filming In January

Everyone knew the Tomb Raider reboot movie was happening soon, but no one expected it to start filming as early as next month.

In a new report from My Entertainment World, it's been revealed that Tomb Raider will begin the early stages of shooting in January 2017. The filming locations will include South Africa and the UK, but it hasn't been announced as to whether or not any other locations will be added.

Tomb Raider will be more of an origin story than the earlier Angelina Jolie takes on the popular video game character. The movie will focus on a younger version of Laura Croft, similar to the one featured in the 2013 game, and will follow the explorer as she tries to find her father and understand the secrets of their past.

Originally, it was rumored that Star Wars star Daisy Ridley was being courted for the title role. The new take on Croft ended up going in a different direction though, as the role was given to recent Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander.

Vikander made waves throughout Hollywood for her roles in Ex Machina and The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but earned her Oscar for Best Actress In A Supporting Role for her part in The Danish Girl.

Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Justified) has been tapped to play the villain in the film.

Tomb Raider has been written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is also slated to write upcoming films like ROM, Sherlock Holmes 3, and Gotham City Sirens. The movie is being directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthag.

The Tomb Raider reboot is set to hit theaters March 16, 2018.
