Over four decades ago, production began on what would become one of the most popular and successful science fiction and fantasy films in existence, spawning a whole new universe with cherished characters across theaters, televisions, novels, action figures, theme parks… the list goes on.

There are few mediums the Star Wars saga has yet to dominate, and it all began nearly 40 years ago.

With just a few weeks until the latest Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando, anticipation is mounting as people involved with George Lucas' original film begin contributing to the festivities.

Luke Skywalker himself just released a landmark photograph to commemorate the anniversary. Mark Hamill posted a photo of himself in costume on the first day of filming the original Star Wars movie in Tunisia. Production began in March 1976 on location which would serve as Tatooine.

Hamill followed up that tweet with a response to a fan, indicating that he had a lot of the same confusion as everyone else on the crew but was a little more confident in the final product.

There's a lot of history behind George Lucas' epic production. Many cast, crew, and executives weren't as confident in the finished film until it finally released. As with any new property, especially one of such a massive undertaking, everything is shrouded in doubt until the box office numbers roll in.

And with Star Wars, Lucas was constantly changing things, pushing technology, or pioneering new methods to achieve his vision. A lot of people thought it would be a flop. But it was anything but, and after 40 years of pushing the narrative into unexpected places, the Star Wars machine doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon.
