Star Wars: Episode VIII Trailer Probably Not Coming Until Spring

Last year, Lucasfilm sent fans into a frenzy when it released the first installment of its new Star Wars trilogy. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens rushed into theaters to all sorts of fanfare, and fans have been impatiently waiting for a trailer for Episode VIII. Now, fans are being teased about when the footage may drop thanks to Kathleen Kennedy.

In a recent interview, Kennedy was asked by journalist Lizo Mzmiba when fans may start seeing updates about Episode VIII. The president of Lucasfilm had this to say about the trailer: "Pretty soon. We're giving this [Rogue One] a little breathing room. Probably heading into spring, you'll start to see things."

Of course, fans are not surprised about the trailer delay. While some were hopeful footage may be shown in conjunction with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm has elected to give the standalone some breathing room. Given the popularity of the Star Wars saga installments, a trailer may have overshadowed the good work and content of Rogue One as it heads into theaters this weekend.

However, next year will be free and clear for Lucasfilm when it comes to Episode VIII promotions. The much-anticipated film is expected to reach theaters on December 15, 2017, so marketing will kick into high-gear next year.

Not long ago, one of the stars from Episode VIII teased fans about the footage. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, talked to Empire Online about the fabled trailer. When the starlet was asked about the latest, Ridley confessed she had watched a sizzle reel of Episode VIII.

"I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very...[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It's very, very exciting. Rian doesn't love showing stuff. I've seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it's fully done. I don't think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team…."

However, Ridley confessed she could not speak to when the trailer would premiere. "I could probably ask," she said, "but Rogue One is out in like a week, so I guess we'll let that come out, be amazing, let people respond to that first. One step at a time! I know there's Celebration next year. Hopefully something will be shown there? That's speculation, by the way."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue Onetells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
