‘Star Wars’: Obi-Wan Spin-Off Working Title Teases Tatooine Roots

08/24/2017 04:32 pm EDT

After months of speculation, Star Wars fans were let in on a major Lucasfilm secret as of late; Reports confirmed the studio was working on an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, and it appears as if the film's spoiler-friendly working title has been discovered.

Omega Underground published an article earlier today which reveals the hidden working title. The site suggests the Obi-Wan spin-off is operating under the title 'Joshua Tree' for the time being. And, if you are familiar with Star Wars production trivia, then you will see the connection between 'Joshua Tree' and Tatooine.

Current speculation about the title connects the Obi-Wan spin-off to the Joshua Tree National Park. The location is one of the world's most popular conservatories, and fans believe the 'Joshua Tree' title suggests the Obi-Wan spin-off will film at the park. Lucasfilm has used the area before as the original Star Wars trilogy shot several of its Tatooine scenes at Death Valley National Park, a location that's geographically similar to the Joshua Tree National Park.

Of course, there is no word from Lucasfilm about the working title, but fans would not be surprised if the spin-off does take place in Tatooine. After all, audiences have long asked for Lucasfilm to fill them in on what Obi-Wan did between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. The latter film introduced fans to an aged Obi-Wan as he hid out on Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker. Lucasfilm's spin-off could investigate how Obi-Wan wound up on Tatooine for good and explore any adventures the Jedi partook in before going into hiding.

For now, fans will just have to wait and see what the Obi-Wan spin-off has in store. Lucasfilm is being rightly cagey about the film's details and casting. There's no word on whether Ewan McGregor will even return as Obi-Wan following his stint with the prequels, but the Scottish actor has said he's interested in revisiting the role.

With Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the horizon, Lucasfilm is in no rush to publicize its next spin-off, but the fandom won't quit speculating so easily. If there's a theory out there that can explain Tatooine's presence in the Obi-Wan spin-off, the fans will surely find it.

The Han Solo spinoff is filming now under director Ron Howard for a May 25, 2018 release. Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca in the era before Star Wars: A New Hope, before they met Leia and Luke and embarked on a galaxy-saving adventure. Donald Glover also stars as Lando Calrissian, with Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Emilia Clarke in as-yet-unrevealed co-starring roles.
