Rogue One Eyeing $221 Million Opening Week

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story continues to be a big success for Disney and LucasFilm - even if that success pales in comparison to the phenomenon that was The Force Awakens.

As we near the official one-week point of Rogue One's release, projections put the Star Wars standalone film at an estimated $221.7 million box office take, domestically.

Deadline reports that Rogue One is moreover estimated to take in an additional $100 million over the Christmas weekend, bringing the film's domestic cumlative total to over $321 million. Rouge One also has (as of writing this) $182 million in overseas earnings, which are only goign to expand in the next week or so, as well.

While this is, again, a lower earning than The Force Awakens, it's still a big success in terms of December blockbuster releases, and is another definite win for Disney/Lucasfilm.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now in theaters.
