Star Wars Officially Transfers Ownership Of Anakin's Lightsaber

Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens was packed with monumental moments propelling the beloved saga into the future for new generations, few scenes had an impact like when Rey first discovered Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber in Maz Kanata's basement.

The weapon called to her, guiding her to its presence, then floored her with a series of visions revealing key moments in the universe's past, present, and future.

Though she initially shunned the item, Rey has since claimed possession of it and is even shown wielding it in new promotional material for the next Star Wars movie, despite trying to give it back to its rightful owner in the closing scenes of The Force Awakens.

Lucasfilm has since recognized the change in ownership, officially dubbing the weapon as "Rey's Lightsaber," meaning the item is no longer referred to as belonging to Anakin in the canon.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Pablo Hidalgo spoke about the changing of the guard and what it means for the future of the troubled weapon and the new heroine who wields it.

"In general," Hidalgo explains, "a lightsaber belongs to the person who constructed it." Obviously not the case here with Rey. "In The Force Awakens, Maz says that the saber is calling to Rey now. Whether or not it's literally calling to her to become hers or it's calling to her because she knows it will be taken back to Luke—we'll see," Hidalgo hints.

Either way, the blade is no longer considered Anakin's lightsaber by the Lucasfilm marketing department. It has now officially been dubbed "Rey's."

The lightsaber has had a tumultuous history. After it was constructed by who was supposed to be the Chosen One, its maker used it to murder a bunch of younglings in the Jedi Temple after the initiation of Order 66.

Then Anakin got all of his limbs chopped off in a battle with Obi-Wan, but since he had already taken the name Darth Vader it was a convenient turn of events because he had to build a foreboding red lightsaber regardless.

Obi-Wan took it and held onto it, giving it to Luke before ultimately turning into a pile of clothes thanks to the aforementioned red lightsaber. Then Luke lost it in Bespin after the same red lightsaber separated his hand from the rest of his body.

Some unknown events that will probably described in an eventual book or comic occurred, and now it's in Rey's possession. Will Rey end up suffering a hand-lopping event, necessitating the need to construct her own lightsaber? We'll find out in the second Star Wars movie of the trilogy, which tends to be when a disfiguration occurs.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
