Luke And Rey Featured On 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Empire Cover

Luke Skywalker and his new apprentice strike a pose on the newly revealed holographic cover to an upcoming issue of Empire magazine.

Luke is once again played by original Star Wars trilogy star Mark Hamill. Rey is played by Daisy Ridley, reprising her role from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Check out the cover below.

The title of the eighth episode of Star Wars' Skywalker saga doesn't seem to bode well for Luke, who became the last known Jedi alive in the galaxy in Return of the Jedi. His hopes for establishing a new Jedi Order were seemingly crushed when Ben Solo fell to the dark side, became Kylo Ren, and slaughtered Luke's other students.

However, as Hamill himself has said, The Last Jedi isn't about Luke. The focus of the film is squarely on Rey, the Force sensitive scavenger who was mysteriously abandoned on the desert planet Jakku. At the end of The Force Awakens, Rey sought out Luke's tutelage in the ways of the Jedi, but if the first trailer for The Last Jedi is anything to go by, Luke may not be a willing teacher.

"[I]t's not about us anymore," Hamill said. "In this new one, I was saying to [writer/director] Rian Johnson: I need to know my back story. It was kind of unclear. You read where he is now and what he's doing now and sort of have to fill in the blanks for yourself. So I did do a back story myself. It's not about Luke anymore, so it's not really important. But I had to make sense of it for myself."
