Star Wars: Rian Johnson Reveals Why Kylo Ren's Scar Was Changed

After being introduced to a whole new generation of characters in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans have been eagerly anticipating further developments for the characters. And with the recent trailer for December's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans got their wish - but with a slight change to an important moment of The Force Awakens.

In the film's third act, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) was severely scarred during a lightsaber battle with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). The mark was severe, running all the way up his face, and centered on Kylo's nose.

But in the character's blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in The Last Jedi trailer, something about Kylo's scar was significantly different. It had moved several inches on the character's face, now in line with his right eye. You can see a comparison below.

The Internet quickly noticed the difference, and began questioning why the change was made. While some had wondered if it was simply a continuity error, or if it would somehow factor into The Last Jedi's plot, the film's director Rian Johnson has now clarified otherwise.

According to Johnson, via Twitter, the change was made simply for aesthetic reasons - which were justified by the fact that the scar itself would be seen throughout the film.

Regardless of what your theory was about the change to Kylo's scar, you have to admit that the new placement does look pretty cool.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the next Lucasfilm movie on the calendar, set to release December 15.
