Seth Gilliam Teases A Tougher Father Gabriel On The Walking Dead

Father Gabriel seems to evolve with each new appearance on The Walking Dead.

Upon his introduction, the character came off as a coward interested solely in self-preservation, even if it meant allowing others to die while keeping himself safe. However, since those moments which made fans hate the character who refused to kill anything, he has evolved into a next-level survivor who seems to be earning some favoritism and trust from audiences and fans, alike.

Season 6 saw the character gun down a Savior outside of their compound. Season 7 saw him quickly cover for Maggie's trip to the Hilltop, in addition to calling Spencer "a tremendous s---."He even took a member of the junkyard gang hostage in an effort to help Rick's group upon arrival. According to Seth Gilliam, the actor burdened with playing the holy man, Gabriel will continue to evolve into a hardened survivor.

"I think Father Gabriel is getting a little tougher for the world that's around him and is trying to handle weapons a little better," Gilliam told ComicBook.com at PaleyFest over the weekend. "That's about as much as I can say without ruining it!"

When Season 7 comes to a close, The Walking Dead will have aired 100 episodes. Gilliam has been on the ride with the AMC series for about half of its run now and is as excited as anybody to achieve such a milestone with the series.

"Scott Gimple is very locked down about what's coming up," Gilliam said. "I think it's probably going to mean a lot more to people like Andrew Lincoln and Melissa McBride who have been in it since the beginning, getting to 100 episodes. For me, it will be like, 'I'm happy to be here! I'm still here!' I'm along for the ride at this point."
