The Walking Dead's Daryl Was Supposed To Ride Something Else

The Walking Dead's original plans for Daryl Dixon did not include motorcycles but a different form of transportation entirely.

In a recent interview, The Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon actor Norman Reedus revealed the show original called for his character mounting a horse rather than a motorcycle. It was a call made by Reedus on set which provoked the change in the early days of production.

"Early on I had a scene where I was supposed to ride a horse," Reedus said. "I'm terrified of horses so just when we were about to shoot, I said, 'Well, whose motorcycle is that?' And they go, 'That's your brother's.' And I go, 'Well, if he can ride bikes I can probably ride bikes too.' And so they changed the horse for the motorcycle last-minute because I was freaking out because of horses."

As the story goes, both Merle and Daryl were motorcycle riders, though Daryl would emerge as the fan-favorite character surviving long enough to turn the vehicle into an iconic part of the character.

Reedus, a motorcycle enthusiast, was pleased with the change. Since, it has helped the actor launch his Ride with Norman Reedus series which airs outside of The Walking Dead's normal season and follows Reedus around various parts of the globe as he rides bikes with famous friends. He also owns "six bikes" now.

"I tried to get Cher on Ride," Reedus said. "That would be awesome. So somebody like Cher or maybe like Marianne Faithfull. We'd both wear one-piece leather outfits with fur on the inside, like [Faithfull wore in] that movie 'The Girl on a Motorcycle.' That'd be fun."

When it comes to that fear of horses, Reedus isn't scared to explain it. "They have giant eyeballs and they can smell your fear," Reedus said.

The Walking Dead's sibling series Fear the Walking Dead returns September 10th. The Walking Dead will return for its eighth season on October 22, 2017. The Season Eight premiere will mark 100 episodes overall for the popular AMC series. For complete coverage and insider info all season long, follow @BrandonDavisBD on Twitter.
