The Walking Dead: Negan's Origin Story Expanded

Skybound and Image Comics have been revealing Negan's backstory in 4-page monthly increments since April.

Originally, the Here's Negan story which has revealed the villain's pre-apocalypse lifestyle was planned to print 48-pages through 12 months of installments in the Image+ preview magazine. In the most recent issue of The Walking Dead comics' Letter Hacks section, writer Robert Kirkman says that the story will now run for 64-pages. This means four more months of 4-page installments of Here's Negan and possibly a bit more detail regarding the fan-favorite bully.

Here's Negan has given Negan an unexpected backstory. After many fans built theories around the villain being a car salesman prior to the zombie takeover as a result of a comment Kirkman once made, it was reveale Negan was, in fact, a high school gym teacher. Furthermore, the man who carries around a baseball bat to bash brains apparently had good reason for keeping it so close to him and treating it like a lady. Lucille was a tribute to Negan's wife by the same name who passed away to cancer just as the world began to fall apart.

So, when you hear Negan plead, "Lucille, give me strength," as he did in the midseason 7 finale of the AMC series, he may actually be speaking to his late wife. The show, however, may take the liberty of altering Negan's backstory when it adapted to cable. So far, however, the character's story has followed that of the comics quite accurately.

Originally introduced in issue #100 of The Walking Dead comics, Negan made his presence known by bashing in the skull of Glenn Rhee. After a war with Rick Grimes, the villain found himself jailed and ultimately playing the role of anti-hero in the most recent Whisperer War story. Whether or not he'll survive the current battle or actually become an ally to Rick is to be seen in the coming issues.
