Doctor Who's Season Finale May Include [SPOILER]

SPOILER WARNING: This article may contain major spoilers for the season ten finale of Doctor Who.

Tonight's season finale of Doctor Who may be titled "The Doctor Falls," but fans may have to wait a few more months for the Doctor to hit the ground.

Rumor has it that Doctor Who Season 10 will end on a cliffhanger that will not be resolved until Christmas Day, when the Doctor Who 2017 Christmas Special finally show Peter Capaldi's regeneration in full.

The rumor suggests that the cold open of last week's episode, "World Enough and Time," is actually where "The Doctor Falls" will end. That scene saw Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor stumble out of the TARDIS into the snow with regeneration energy flowing off of him. The Christmas setting would explain the snow.

"The Doctor is mortally wounded, staggering out of the TARDIS into the snow and starting to regenerate. What you're seeing is the beginning of the process," outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat recently told Doctor Who Magazine, which would seem to confirm how tonight's finale will end.

"The Doctor Falls" is a special 60-minute finale that will pick up where last week's episode, "World Enough and Time," left off. In "The Doctor Falls," The Doctor makes a final stand against an army of Cybermen to protect a tiny band of humans from destruction.

The episode also features Michele Gomez as Missy and John Simm reprising his role as The Master.

Capaldi took over as The Doctor in Season 8, after Matt Smith's departure. After three seasons, he will depart the show alongside showrunner Steven Moffat, who has steered the series since Season 5. Moffat was a breakout writer during the Russell T. Davies seasons of Doctor Who.

Moffat will be handing the reins over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall for Doctor Who Season 11. Chibnall is a longtime Doctor Who fans who also wrote for the series during the Russell T. Davies era and was head writer on the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood.

Doctor Who Season 10 also introduces Pearl Mackie as the new companion, Bill Potts, replacing the previous companion, Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald, who left after Season 9. Whether she will join the new Doctor in Doctor Who Season 11 is still unknown

The Doctor Who Season 10 finale airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.
