Jeffrey Dean Morgan Teases 'Supernatural' Return

09/26/2017 06:11 pm EDT

At the New Jersey Supernatural Convention in Secaucus, New Jersey, this weekend, The Walking Dead and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan told an audience of fans during his Q&A panel that he had a fairly specific vision for what a return go Supernatural might look like.

The actor, who played John Winchester from 2005 until 2007, has lingered over the series since but has rarely been featured in the years since his character's death. His sons, Sam and Dean, are the stars of the series and were recently reunited with their long-lost mother, Mary.

"Before it's all said and done, and we talk about it all the time and I've been saying it for years — because it's Supernatural, and you can come back (as proven by every actor that's ever been on the show), I certainly hope that at some point not only will John return in some capacity but I think that Sam and Dean need to have some closure with this guy and I think that John would like the opportunity to have some closure, and I think you, the audience, deserves it," Morgan told a fan who asked whether he might come back to the hit CW drama.

After that, he joked about possibly coming back with a new spinoff where John and his sons become gardenes and forgo the supernatural for a different kind of "adventure."

Morgan's panel was supposedly off-limits to video recording, but it appears somebody managed to capture it on video, seen above.

In the years since leaving Supernatural, Morgan has been one of Hollywood's busiest working actors. He played The Comedian in 2009's Watchmen, just as he wrapped production on his final episodes of Grey's Anatomy, on which he played the recurring role of Denny Duquette. The next year, he appeared in another DC/Vertigo adaptation: The Losers, with a slew of other soon-to-be-famous comic book movie stars. Since then, he has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows, including memorable runs on Extant and The Good Wife, before taking on the role of Negan on AMC's top-rated The Walking Dead.

Supernatural will return on Thursday, October 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, leading into the season premiere of Arrow.

Editor's note: In the original version of this story, we misreported that this panel had taken place at a Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, which took place in the same buiding the previous weekend. We regret the error.
