More Futurama Is On The Way

Good news, everyone! It sounds like more Futurama is in the works, though it may not be in quite the form you're hoping for.

The series just made a return of sorts in the form of the new mobile game Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, which features the original series voice cast and brand new animation. Is that the end for Futurama?

"There are no new TV episodes or movies in the pipeline at the moment…." Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen broke to fans in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. "HOWEVER, here and now I promise a different avenue of exciting Futurama news later this summer, no kidding. Keep your expectations modest and you will be pleased, possibly. I am not allowed to say more or I will be lightlyphasered."

Well, that's certainly cryptic. However, with most of Futurama leaving Netflix in July, Futurama fans will likely take any "good news!" they can get.

Futurama was created by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and debuted on Fox in 1999. The show ran for four seasons and was canceled in 2003. In 2002, the show began syndication as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, where it found new popularity. This led to a revival in 2006, beginning first with four direct-to-DVD movies (Bender's Big Score, The Beast With A Billion Backs, Bender's Game, and Into the Wild Green Yonder) and then new seasons on Comedy Central. The series was canceled again in 2013, though its syndicated ratings remain strong.

Futurama has already appeared in comics and video games, so if more television episodes or movies are out of the question then it is unclear what form Futurama will take next. Still, at least there's a future for fans to look forward to.
