Robot Chicken To Tackle Westworld, Star Wars Rogue One & The Force Awakens Next Season

Since Season 8 of Robot Chicken was made, there have been many different movies and TV shows that have dominated the world of pop culture. When speaking with Comicbook.com, the producers of the animated parody series promises The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Westworld, and much more will be poked fun at in Season 9. You can watch the interview above.

Considering the turnaround time of crafting the animation and with Season 8 having been completed before Force Awakens had been released, it's been nearly a year and a half since the show could tackle the property. "Luckily, when Season 9 airs, we're finally getting a chance to do Force Awakens and Rogue One. It is so frustrating to be between seasons and awesome stuff happens and we're like, 'We gotta get back to work.' The Star Wars stuff we did this season is pretty smart," revealed producer Doug Goldstein.

Producer Matthew Senreich teased, "We're doing Westworld, it's a lot of the stuff that's just popping up that we get to roll up our sleeves with, which will be nice."

A live-action show like Saturday Night Live has a much faster turnaround time when it comes to incorporating topical pop culture events, but Robot Chicken isn't afforded that luxury.

When it comes to doing sketches based off of Star Wars, the producers have taken a page out of the sketch comedy series' playbook, aiming for brevity over full episodes devoted to a single property.

"For a regular episode of the show, it's parody so it's no different from say Saturday Night Live making fun of any of these properties," Senreich explained to Screen Rant. "But to do a full episode of an actual property, we would need the agreement of that company."

Although many Star Wars fans rejoiced when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, there was an unintended consequence of the deal, which was the involvement of more massive corporations.

Senreich revealed the ease of the initial collaborations of the show and Lucasfilm, noting, "It was just one guy: George Lucas. He saw our show and he was the one to approach us, like, 'What do you guys want to do with us?' It started a multi-year relationship."

Sadly for Senreich, things didn't stay that way, revealing, "When he sold the company to Disney, it changed the relationship…it comes down to corporations playing with each other. As much as we know those people, and they like us and we like them, we are dealing with billion dollar companies that couldn't care less what we think and how well we know each other."

Season 9 of Robot Chicken doesn't yet have an exact season premiere date, but will be debuting on Adult Swim sometime this fall.
