Star Trek: Next Generation Actor Shares Throwback Selfie With Sad William Shatner

Not even the the crew of the USS Enterprise can ignore the holiday that is National Selfie Day. Today, social media has seen itself flooded by netizens who are posting their best high-angle mugshots to celebrate the trivial date. Several celebrities have also jumped on the trend, and it looks like LeVar Burton from Star Trek: Next Generation is the new geek legend to post a throwback photo.

Taking to Twitter, Burton posted a picture of his Next Generation cast mates plus another special guest. "Oh, it's National Selfie Day," the actor captioned his photo. "That explains this all over my timeline."

The picture Burton uploaded shows plenty of familiar faces. Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and Michael Dorn (cut off) can be seen. In the midst, William Shatner can also be seen as he stares a bit woefully into the camera; Somehow, it looks like the Original Series star lost his own crew and teamed up with Jean-Luc Piccard's guys instead.

Burton took the photo a few years back at Wizard World Chicago circa 2014. The Star Trek family gathered for a series of panels, and the Geordi La Forge actor had to snap a commemorative photo.

Clearly, Burton is still fond of his days with Star Trek. The actor is a common face to see on the convention circuit, and fans see Burton's role as a favorite. Geordi has become one of Star Trek's most recognizable character thanks to his VISOR device which allows the blind engineer to see. As for whether Burton may ever trek back into the franchise, that has yet to be seen. CBS will soon roll out its long-awaited show Star Trek: Discovery in September, so there is always a chance Burton may have a walk-on role for the series.

Star Trek: Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Fuller was originally intended to be Discovery's showrunner but was forced step down due to commitments to Starz' adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts have taken over as showrunners. Its cast includes Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca, Rainn Wilson as Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd, James Frain as Sarek, Spock's father, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, the captain of another Starfleet ship, the Shenzhou, which will be important to the plot of Star Trek: Discovery. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp both play science officers. Mary Wiseman will play a final year Starfleet Academy cadet.

Star Trek: Discovery takes place roughly a decade prior to the five-year mission of Star Trek: The Original Series. In breaking with franchise tradition, the show's main protagonist will not be a captain. Instead, it will be First Officer Michael Burnham played by The Walking Dead alum Sonequa Martin-Green.

Star Trek: Discovery premieres Sept. 24, 2017.
