It's a rare thing in film and TV for stars or creators to open up about the flaws in projects they're involved with. One of those rare moments came in an interview with Gotham star Ben McKenzie, conducted by Entertainment Weekly.

McKenzie, who plays Detective Jim Gordon in the Batman prequel series, owned up to the show's initial episodic format being ill-conceived.

"I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever," McKenzie said. "That was just a mistake. We should've never done it."

McKenzie added that the multiple hiatuses in the show's first season, following Fox's order for six more episodes in addition to the 16 the network originally ordered, only made the show harder for fans to follow.

Still, McKenzie says Gotham Season 2 will be just what fans have been hoping for.

"The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them," he said. "Whether they're evil or good, they are entertaining. So that's what we're doing in season 2. [It's] really kick ass. I think it's exactly what the fans want to see."

The second season of Gotham premieres Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
