Exclusive Video: Legends of Tomorrow's Arthur Darvill On Taking Rip Hunter Where He's Never Gone Before

At New York Comic Con last weekend, ComicBook.com was one of the first outlets to speak with former Doctor Who companion Arthur Darvill about his promotion to Time Master in the form of DC Comics' Rip Hunter, the figure at the center of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, premiering in January on The CW.

During the interview, we discussed whether or not we'll see any of Rip's fellow Time Masters, what his relationship with other DC heroes might be like and just what iteration of the ever-changing Hunter Darvill plans to bring to the screen.

We know, or Phil Klemmer has said, there would be no Booster Gold real soon. Are there any other Time Masters we can expect to see?

I don't want to say! Obviously in the concept of the show, they play a big role overall. So they're definitely a big presence on the show, and I've only seen up to Episode Four script-wise, so I'm not quite sure if any of them are going to pop up. So we're going to have to kind of wait and see. I wish I could tell you more than that, but what I know is very exciting.

Rip is a character who's been depicted a number of ways over the years. What's your take? From your character description, you almost sound more like Booster.

Yeah. Yeah, I think having read a lot of the comics, what's quite nice is that I couldn't quite get a grip on who he was, personality-wise. I think that's kind of quite interesting. I love the idea that he's very private and he has that kind of adventurous side but he doesn't like to reveal too much of himself. But he's got some dark stuff that's happened to him in the past (or the future) that he's dealing with.

What I feel they've done so well writing-wise and what they've asked me to do with it is sort of exciting and takes it to a different place that it hasn't been to in the comic books yet. I think that's such an honor to be able to do, but I think the fans of the comic books will be very pleased with the way the character develops.

For the last thirty years or so in the comic, Rip has been a guy who wasn't always trusted. Will that be an issue with characters like The Flash, who have already been burned by a leader figure?

Yeah, absolutely. He's got his own agenda, and whether that fits into everyone else's is yet to be seen. I think there are some serious trust issues because he doesn't like to give anything away and he's trying to achieve what he wants to achieve. He kind of keeps people on a need-to-know basis and it doesn't always necessarily work out well.

Hawkgirl is an interesting character in that the reincarnation element means a time traveler has probably met more than one of her. Is that a relationship that's going to be fun to watch unfold?

I hope so, yeah. I'm fascinated by that, as well. It's so great to be able to play with time travel and these characters specifically. I don't want to give away too much, but it's going to be interesting seeing where these characters are throughout different points in history.
