Ed Sheeran To Guest Star In Game Of Thrones Season 7

It looks like Ed Sheeran is in love with the shape of Game of Thrones. The British singer-songwriter is burning up music charts with his newest album "Divide," but Sheeran will soon be heading to television thanks to HBO. The ginger superstar has been confirmed for a guest role on Game of Thrones' next season, and fans of Sheeran are hoping the singer gets to visit a castle on the hill during his TV tenure.

Today, the showrunners of Game of Thrones announced Sheeran would be part of season seven at the Southwest Film Festival. David Benioff and Dan Weiss said the star was brought on because Arya Stark's Maisie Williams is a massive fans.

"For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it," Benioff explained.

Sheeran will not be the only musician guest starring on Game of Thrones next season. The singer will be joined by Mastodon, Sigur Ros, Coldplay's Will Champion, and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol.

"A lot of [music artists] say they would they would like to [be on the show], and then we tell them [shooting a scene] is so boring," Weiss told fans. "'You're gonna hate this — you're going to be sitting around three days for 12 hours a day.'"

Of course, it won't take long for fans to run into Sheeran or the show's other musical guests. The seventh season is slated to house just seven episodes when it debuts this summer. And, for anyone coming on for the series' final season, it looks like season nine will be even shorter.

During the event, Benioff and Weiss let fans know the final season of Game of Thrones would be a very short one. "It's only going to be six episodes for the final season," Benioff told the crowd. Unsurprisingly, fans were a bit disappointed by the short order. However, with a lesser episode count, HBO can hopefully go all-out with its budgeting for the explosive ninth season.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres on HBO on July 16, 2017.
