Game Of Thrones: Kit Harington On Why Season 7 Will Be The Biggest Yet

Game of Thrones last two seasons will consist of fewer episodes than usual. After revealing the eight-episode Season 7 premieres later this summer, the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed today that the eighth season will only be 6 episodes.

The news that HBO's epic adaptation of George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire will only have 14 more episodes might be disappointing for some viewers. But Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington revealed some key details that might improve fans opinions on the truncated seasons.


While speaking with Huffington Post about the seventh season's premiere date being revealed, Harrington gave some intriguing tidbits about the final seasons' production.

"They spent an increasing amount of money on less episodes, so it's gonna be much bigger in scale, the CGI ... we're trying new things, experimenting with new camera techniques," the actor revealed. "I think we're trying to break boundaries and push past boundaries in these final two seasons."

With the increased budget per episode and the increasingly epic and intersectional nature of the conflicts, it makes sense that the producers would go all out for the final seasons. The show has been about moving characters around like they're chess pieces on a board. And now that they're all in place, it's finally time for some action-packed and dramatic moments.

"I certainly did more this season than I've ever done. I think every actor on it did more action, had more action, had more scenes," Harrington added. "They really focused it because less characters are coming in, and they're focusing in on the existing ones, and there are lots of people who cross paths, and that's something that I think the audience has been waiting for for a long time."

Harrington said the producers have been building the sense of scope and scale to the series increasingly each season, and all of that will finally pay off.

"You have to live up to the hype that's surrounded the show and the worst thing would be to end without really pushing and trying new things. Even if it's a failure, at least trying to go out with a bang."

Game of Thrones penultimate season begins July 16.
