Netflix's A Series Of Unfortunate Events Releases New Trailer

It is not often that a trailer tells its viewers to watch another program, but not every trailer is meant to advertise A Series of Unfortunate Events. Netflix has released a new trailer for its much-anticipated original series, and it starts off with an ominous warning.

"If you are interested in a story with a happy ending, that story is streaming elsewhere," the trailer warns. "I would advise all our viewers to watch something more pleasant instead."

Earlier this year, Netflix rolled out the first full-length trailer for A Series of Unfortunate Events, but this new video gives fans a much better look at the show's slew of characters. The colorful series stars talent like Neil Patrick Harris and Patrick Warburton, and fans are already clamoring over how canonical the trailer feels to Lemony Snicket's novels.

The trailer goes to great lengths to introduce viewers to the poor Baudelaire orphans after they are sent to live with the fearsome Count Olaf. The children are subjected to all sorts of strange encounters as their caretaker tests them again and again. They eventually discover Count Olaf is after their family's wealthy estate, and he will stop at nothing to strip the Baudelaire's fortune from them.

Fans first learned that A Series of Unfortunate Events would be coming to Netflix in association with Paramount Television last year. In July, a video titled "An Unfortunate Teaser" was posted to Youtube which teased the show, but Netflix claimed the trailer was fan-made though many are skeptical about that claim.

Later in the year, Barry Sonnenfeld and Mark Hudis were tapped to helm the series. Neil Patrick Harris was cast to play Count Olaf while Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes signed on to play Violet and Klaus Baudelaire.

This spring, K. Todd Freeman was cast as Mr. Poe and Patrick Warbuton agreed to portray Lemony Snicket himself. Production went underway in March, and filming recently wrapped in August.

This isn't the first time A Series of Unfortunate Events has hit the screen. In 2004, director Brad Silberling released a live-action film based on the novel featuring Jim Carrey, Emily Browning, and Jude Law.

Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans -- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents' mysterious death. The eight-episode series is a Netflix original production, executive produced by Emmy Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler, and premieres January 13, 2017 only on Netflix.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events will premiere on January 13, 2017.
