Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XII Remaster The Zodiac Age

While Final Fantasy VII is Square Enix's most popular entry in the long-running RPG series, but Final Fantasy XII is probably the most divisive amongst fans.

Part of it was its debut towards the end of the PS2's main life cycle (in 2006) and the looming of the PS3. Another issue was the game's battle mechanics, centered around the gambit system. At the time, it was a rather bold choice, especially in contrast to the previous entries where players controlled every aspect of what their characters did. With the onset of MMO's, the system doesn't appear so strange, and time has seemingly made the entry less polarizing.

Now fans have another chance to experience the title with a new remaster coming to PS4. Subtitled The Zodiac Age, the game will have all the remastered HD graphical upgrades you've come to expect as well as updated audio. For fans of the original, you'll be able to switch between the original soundtrack and the remastered version.

The core experience will also include Trophies and thankfully shorter load times, as well as sharing integration and auto saves. Auto saves would be a huge improvement, as in the original title you were still restricted to finding save crystals at certain locations. The developers have added a new survival-based trial mode as well, where players can battle enemies in up to 100 successive rounds.

One of the hallmarks of the Japan only International Version was a revamped Job System and Licence Board, which will make its way into The Zodiac Age for stateside gamers to experience for the first time.

Final Fantasy VII: The Zodiac Age is set for release sometime in 2017.
