Super-Fan Builds Custom Voltron Lion Bikes

Super-Fan Builds aims to bring one of a kind items and projects to super fans around the world, and this week's project involved Dreamworks Animation and Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender.

For superfans Ben and Richard, the love for the franchise started with Richard introducing Ben to the original series, but they've also come to love Legendary Defender.

"Ben: Well my dad kind of introduced it to me, and I got hooked to it. I really like it."

"Richard: I loved Voltron. You know it's like the original big space robot, and ever since we've just been able to go in and watch the show together and play with the toys and we loved it."

Fon Davis is the one responsible for bringing Ben and Richard's love of Voltron to life and decided the best way to do that would be to create custom bikes for the father-son duo that represented their most prevalent traits since they love the outdoors. With some help from Design Supervisor Christine Bian, who worked on Voltron: Legendary Defender, they decided that Richard embodied the Black Lion and Ben was closer to the Green Lion. With that settled, it was time to get to work.

The team was provided the digital files directly from the show, and once assembled digitally, were printed out so they could lay them on the bike and figure out the best placement. Once a design was settled on, the team cut the pieces out of medium density fiberboard, while another team started work on sculpting the heads.

After some testing, the pieces were disassembled and painted and then reassembled. Finally, it was time for the big reveal, and Ben and Richard were floored by the final product. Fon and company even threw in a standup bike helmet rack.
