Death Note's Original Creators Love Netflix's Film

Hollywood is not know for to put its best foot forward when it comes to anime. Films like Dragonball Evolution cemented the industry's lackluster reputation with anime fans, but Netflix hopes to turn those tides next month. The site will share its live-action take on Death Note later next month, and it seems as if the franchise's creators are big fans.

Recently, the cast and crew of Death Note stopped by San Diego Comic Con to promote the film. It was there producer Masi Oka revealed he had screened the movie for creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takesha Obata not long ago.
"The greatest moment for me was going to Japan and showing the film to [Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata], and we had a private screening for them. And when they came out and said, 'Thank you,' and 'We love the film,' it really just brought a tear to my eye, because I'm an otaku and a geek just like everyone," Oka explained (via LRM).
"I grew up on this, so having the senseis be proud of our films makes me proud, and hopefully in turn will make the fans proud of the film as well."
Of course, fans will be entitled to their own thoughts about Death Note once it debuts, but its creators' reactions are encouraging. After all, anime fans know what it looks like what manga artist are not pleased with Hollywood's take on their series. Dragon Ball's creator Akira Toriyama has publicly distanced his massive franchise from its miserable live-action adaptation.

Death Note will be available to stream on Netflix beginning August 25, 2017.
