Dragon Ball Super Features A Heart-Wrenching Goku Easter Egg

Dragon Ball Super may be busy setting up action for its ongoing arc, but the folks at Toei Animation aren't simply rushing through the series. The anime stands as the franchise's latest show, prompting new and old fans to see what it has to offer. Recently, Dragon Ball Super saw its 94th episode premiere to positive reviews, and longtime fans just noticed the episode houses one heart-wrenching easter egg for Goku.

Seriously, Dragon Ball fans better get ready to shed a few dozen tears.

Over on Reddit, Dragon Ball fans shared a GIF set which captures the anime's recent throwback. Dragon Ball Super's latest episode follows Goku as he asks Baba to revive Freeza in order for the villain to help save Universe 7. During the episode, Goku is seen practicing a one-sided spar, and fans finally noticed the fighter is reenacting the battle he had with Grandpa Gohan years ago.

In the original Dragon Ball series, fans came to know Grandpa Gohan for his sagely attitude and kindness. The older martial artist became a surrogate father to Goku after the baby was found abandoned on Earth. However, when Goku first transformed into a Great Ape as a child, the boy accidentally killed Grandpa Gohan without realizing what happened.

However, since Dragon Ball never lets ghosts lie, Goku is reunited with his Grandpa because of Fortuneteller Baba. The kid is forced to fight in a tournament to discover where Earth's last Dragon Ball is. Goku winds up being pitted against a temporarily revived Gohan who dons a white fox mask to disguise himself. The two fight hard before Gohan gains the upper-hand. Everyone is taken back by the older man's brutality, but Goku realizes the fighter is Gohan when the old man chastises him about using his tail. The two then have a rather emotional reunion before Gohan goes back to the afterlife.

The GIFs below show the two scenes in comparison, and it is impossible to overlook their similarities. Goku may be older in Dragon Ball Super, but the carefree Saiyan still remembers each move he used against Grandpa Gohan the last time they met. And, if you aren't crying yet, then you just need to watch the GIF set a few more times. The tears are coming, don't worry.

The synopsis of Dragon Ball Super's current saga can be read here:
