Dragon Ball Super: Piccolo Finally Knocked Some Sense Into Gohan

It's no secret: the Dragon Ball fandom has been more than annoyed with Gohan as of late. The character had a bright future back in the days of Dragon Ball Z, but fans slowly grew frustrated with the hero following the Majin Buu arc. Dragon Ball GT only enraged fans more, so many had hoped Dragon Ball Super would redeem the half-Saiyan - but it didn't do much in that respect. Bogged down by marriage and fatherhood, Gohan lost the edge which made him a sharp character for fans to follow. His floundering characterization and weaking power levels left fans upset, but they weren't the only ones miffed.

Apparently, Piccolo has been none to happy about Gohan's recent attitude. And, in the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super, the Namekian finally knocked Gohan down a peg to make him see sense.

In the 88th episode of Dragon Ball Super, fans watched as Piccolo and Gohan reunited to some old-fashioned training sessions. Nostalgia had fans feeling good about the two sparring, but the hype rose to all-new levels when Piccolo spit some truth at Gohan.

"I see nothing but overeagerness," Piccolo scolds Gohan after the half-Saiyans fails to wind him in a spar. "You won't get anything done like that. Training is pointless much less getting stronger."

"If you can't even evoke your original strength, you'll never be able to protect your family!"

Ouch! Still, Piccolo makes a valid point. Gohan is unable to tap into his fullest power. The episode ends with the hero regaining the ability to enter his mystic form, but Gohan's desire for quick-fixes and cocky gloating make him an easy target. Just ask Super Buu.

"When Elder Kai drew out your power to fight Buu, you became arrogant and over-estimated your power. You got drunk on that power. No matter how strong you become, so long as you have that arrogance, you can't win the tournament," Piccolo tells a distraught Gohan.

By the episode's end, Gohan seems to have gotten it through his head that being part Saiyan doesn't make him invincible. Just like Piccolo asked, the hero starts to take his warrior instincts a bit more seriously. And, for fans at home, they were left pleased knowing that someone finally called out Gohan on his most frustrating flaws.

Dragon Ball Super's "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
