Last week Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale opened in North America, as well as other box offices around the world. The movie was a huge success, selling over 700,000 tickets, for about $5.32 million in foreign box office ticket sales (outside Japan). In North American theaters alone the film surpassed 1.35 million.

The film opened in other countries over the last month as well, such as South Korea, Thailand, Mexico, and Taiwan. It was ranked in the top 10 at the box office in all of those countries, earning $700,000 in South Korea, $1.3 million in Taiwan, and $400,000 in Singapore. The film is also set to still open in more countries around the world such as Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and Italy in the original Japanese with subtitles. It is set to play with a dubbed version in Germany, Mexico, France, and Italy.

American fans that missed the subbed release last week have another chance to see the film again starting April 22, as it will return to the United States with an English dub.

If you are unfamiliar with Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale, it is the first feature movie set in the Sword Art Online world. The official website for the movie sets up the movie with the following,

"In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba. Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn't have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is "Ordinal Scale" (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They're about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn't all fun and games…"

The film original opened in Japan on February 18, and broke records, being the first anime film to rank number one spot in both weekend attendance and weekend box office reciept totals, since Your Name. The film sold about 308,376 tickets for $3.76 million, and in its opening weekend. Since its opening it has sold more than a million tickets in Japan.

Tickets for the film as well as more information and special products can be found on the Sword Art Online Movie's: Ordinal Scale's official website here.
