Is Dragon Ball Super Planning To Make Broly Canon?

There is one character in the Dragon Ball fandom who has the power to send all fans into a tizzy, and it isn't Goku. While the Saiyan does carry a lot of weight with anime lovers, Broly is the one character who never fails to inspire controversy. Whether you love or hate the bulging villain, Broly has become a legendary character in the Dragon Ball universe despite his non-canon status.

However, it looks like things may be about to change for the character, and fan-wars are already starting to break out within the Dragon Ball fandom. The most recent arc of Dragon Ball Super has dropped a few hints that Broly may soon become canon, and anime diehards aren't sure how to feel about the possibility.

Suspicions arose about Broly's status change when Dragon Ball Super dropped the first trailer for its 'Universal Survival' storyline. The action-packed title showed a series of new villain, but one girl caught everyone's eye. In the trailer, fans watched as a Saiyan from Universe 6 transformed into a Super Saiyan, and her hulking state looked just like Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan form.

The character's transformation has been the biggest indicator of Broly's potential revival in Dragon Ball Super, but the anime has dropped other hints. When the female Saiyan was introduced to fans, audiences quickly spotted a pun-tastic connection between her and Broly. In true Dragon Ball style, the lady Saiyan's name turned out to be Kale as it refers to Akira Toriyama's on-going vegetable puns. Broly is named after broccoli, and fans didn't miss the tasty connection between them. The two veggies derive from a shared ancestor, and some fans are taking that as a sign from Kami.

For now, there is no way to tell if Broly will become canon until Goku and the Universe 7 heroes see Kale go Super Saiyan. If Goku or Vegeta recognize the state or give nod to it, then they will have solidified Broly's place in the Dragon Ball canon. Still, there are fans who will surely push back on that standing. There is no official Dragon Ball canon out there, but plenty of fans will only consider something stories or character as such if they get Toriyama's permission.

Next week, it looks like fans will get to see the beginnings of Kale's Super Saiyan journey. Dragon Ball Super's upcoming episode has hinted that the female Saiyan Caulifla will level up her power, but the achievement will only make Kale jealous. It won't take long for the underling to try her own hand at the transformation, and Cabba will certainly be stunned when she does. That's for sure.

Dragon Ball Super's "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
