The 5 Biggest Things That Happened In Comics This Week

With so many new comics hitting the shelves every Wednesday, it's easy to miss some of the smaller happenings throughout the week. Once the weekend comes it feels like you finally have a chance to catch up, so why not make it a little easier to find the highlights from the industry in one place?

Sounds good right? Whether it's Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, BOOM!, Titan, Oni Press, or industry related, this is a one-stop spot for what went on in comics this week. There's plenty more that happened of course, and you can always check out the CB Comics hub to find more. If you're in a hurry though you can hit the next slide to get the cliff notes version.

Without further ado here is the first big story of the past week in comics!

Sean Gordon Murphy's Secret Project

Sean Gordon Murphy is quite busy these days, though most of his work is still under wraps.

That hasn't kept him from teasing it on social media though, which he's done quite a bit over the past few weeks. The project's name isn't even known yet, and it's been in the works ever since Murphy signed an exclusive two-year contract with DC.

Murphy's shared storyboards, early sketches, and half-inked pages so far, but with the project aiming for a 2017 or 2018 release, hopefully, more details are on the way soon. All fans know at this point is that the book is an Elseworlds style Batman book, comparing itself to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. You can view more of the teasers here.

Murphy will also be working with Scott Snyder on what is to be his last Batman story for the foreseeable future. Their arc is set to take place after Snyder finishes his current arc with artist Rafael Albuquerque. You can find out more about that here.

Marvel Kills MCU Favorite In Secret Empire

Captain America already has a significant amount of blood on his hands, and this week the Secret Empire death toll increased yet again in a very unexpected way.

Spoilers incoming for Deadpool #31, so you've been warned.

While the superheroes all slept soundly knowing that Captain America was on their side, SHIELD agent Phil Coulson suspected otherwise. He couldn't fathom that Cap would actively be plotting against his friends, but that changed when he discovered the Chitauri eggs that Rogers was keeping on earth.

He escaped the facility only to be followed by Deadpool, who had been instructed by Cap to recover him. It was only at the end of the issue where fans learned that Cap gave an order to shoot on sight, and that's exactly what Deadpool did.

He shot Coulson in the chest, leaving him to fall in a lump on the floor. If the bloody puddle wasn't enough of a giveaway, Deadpool also blew the safehouse to bits, leaving very little room for Coulson to have survived.

Major Marvel Character Hails Hydra

There are some heroes who just can't understand how Captain America could turn to Hydra's side, but for some Cap's new goals perfectly align with theirs.

Spoilers incoming for Secret Empire #3, so you've been warned.

Maria Hill is seen earlier in the issue talking to Black Widow and gives her Captain America's social calendar so Widow's team can plan an ambush. Later in the book Hill's contact Boomerang, the one who organized the meeting between Hill and Widow, is seen being brutally beaten by an unknown assailant.

It's not clear who the person is at first, but he gives a big clue when he says "I could be God's red right hand. I could be his swift and terrible vengeance. I could be your punishment. Hail Hydra."

Yep, it's the Punisher, decked out with a new Hydra logo where his white skull used to be. Punisher was deadly enough before, but without others keeping him in check this could all get very messy.

Venomverse Details Announced

Marvel recently announced a Venomized variant cover campaign, where some of the company's most prominent heroes and villains all get a Venom inspired makeover. That is nothing compared to the newly announced Venomverse though.

Venomverse is a new miniseries that is labeled as the spiritual successor to Marvel's popular Spider-Verse series. Eddie Brock is now back and firmly in control of the symbiote, but he'll need help in defeating a new enemy called "The Poisons", and that means other heroes.

Writer Cullen Bunn is collecting quite the cast for the series, a series with quite the description. "If Spider-Verse was Saving Private Ryan," Lewis tells Nerdist, "then Venomverse is Die Hard."

"Part of picking this cast was definitely thinking about who readers would be most excited to see," said Bunn, "but another part of it–something that I've always found important–is how the Venom symbiote interacts with other hosts. What's really exciting is that we get to see this with characters you'd never expect, like Black Panther, Mary Jane, and Old Man Logan."

Marvel Reveals Runaways Teasers And Book Details

The Runaways are getting a new ongoing series, perfectly complimenting the in production television series on Hulu. Marvel has been teasing the project all week, and now fans have a bit more information about the anticipated series.

Marvel released teaser images for the rest of the team, which include teenagers Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Molly Hayes, Chase Stein, Alex Wilder, and Gertrude Yorkes. The teasers were all drawn by artist Kris Anka, and now Anka has also been announced as the ongoing artist on the series.

Not only that, but Marvel announced that Eleanor & Park author Rainbow Rowell will be writing the book, and her first order of business will be getting the team back together as she told EW.

"It's kind of funny calling them the Runaways because it's not like they're the Avengers or the X-Men. They were not formed with a mission and a purpose. They're just kids who ended up in the same boat. At the beginning of this series they are scattered to the four winds and half of them are dead. One of the challenges now is who are they when they're apart? They got thrown together, but now they've been pulled apart. They're trying to figure out who they really are without each other… This arc is very much about them choosing to be together."
