Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #16 Review - The Final Showdown

06/21/2017 10:01 am EDT

Lord Drakkon's forces have taken all the resistance can give them, with only the Blue Ranger and his power coin standing in their way.

Spoilers incoming for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #16, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.

The Power Rangers are always deadliest when backed into a corner, and sometimes intelligence is more important than brute force. The climactic issue brings that to the forefront and Higgins spotlights why the Rangers were chosen for this task, focusing on their personalities and skill sets rather than their powers and Zords.

It's a bit schmaltzy sure, but then again the Power Rangers have never shied away from that, but rather embraced it. You'll probably even catch yourself reading it in the show's voice, especially in Tommy's case.

While this issue is mostly action, you can't miss the heart throughout, with some especially poignant moments between the Dark Universe's Zach and the present day Rangers. You might even tear up a bit towards the end, and that's a credit to Higgins for making the stakes in this new universe feel like they truly mattered.

While it is best to move on before things get old, hopefully, this isn't the last fans see of this universe. There's just too much here to leave completely behind.

On the art side of things, Hendry Prasetya provides some fantastic sequences and was seemingly born to draw the Megazord. His Trini is so expressive, with just the right amount of edge, and fans will eat up the Drakkon vs Tommy fights with a spoon.

While this arc is coming to a close, there are plenty of interesting subplots that can be explored in future issues, including the fate of Zordon, Saba, Goldar, and that oh so interesting last page.

The team managed to deliver an arc that shows the Rangers at their lowest while also shining a light on their best traits. In doing so they also managed to create a delightful new antagonist for the franchise that should provide plenty of entertainment for years to come.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.
