Geoff Johns Explains What Happens After 'Watchmen' In 'Doomsday Clock'

Ever since fans learned DC Comics would be bringing in characters from the iconic series Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons into the mainstream universe, they've been eager to find out how.

And now the road established in the DC Rebirth special is finally being explored in Doomsday Clock, and writer Geoff Johns revealed how the series explores the events after Watchmen ended. Check out the video above!

DC Comics offered a select few a tour of the first six uncolored and unlettered pages of Doomsday Clock in an art exhibit at New York Comic Con, providing an ashcan of those same pages to those who lucky enough to attend. A new video on DC's YouTube channel allows everyone the chance to see the preview and hear Johns' explain what's going on in his own words.

"What we revealed in this very first page, and this is something that we've held back on until we put out this preview, these pages, is that this is not the DC Universe," revealed Johns.

Asked why the story begins in the Watchmen universe seven after that story, Johns said that decision came "because of the whole story, because of the context in the world." He said that the first page mirrors the beginning of Watchmen which pulls out into a "god's eye point of view."

"It was that god's eye point of view that I wanted to challenge because Doctor Manhattan is essentially a god," Johns said. "And this is all about what the world's become and the strife between the sides that the world has broken into and kind of a damnation of it… and a perspective of how god has left and this is the world he's left behind. And the only way to save it is to bring god back down."

As we saw in the preview, Adrian Veidt's deception has since become public knowledge, with Ozymandias going into hiding as a result of being wanted for mass murder and treason.

It's unclear how much Doomsday Clock will straddle the two worlds and continue the events of Watchmen, but we do know those characters will loom large in the DC Universe.

The first issue of Doomsday Clock will release November 22.
