Fan Video Unpacks DC Movies Character Problem

When comic fans gather together, they often end up on the topic of Marvel and DC's cinematic universe. Whether it's how much they loved Captain America: Civil War, why they hated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, or the never ending debate on Suicide Squad, odds are the topic will come up.

While both universes have their positives and negatives, it's clear that so far Marvel's is clearly ahead by a large margin. YouTube user Patrick H Willems has a theory on why that continues to be the case, as he explains in his new video, it all comes down to character.

While you might not like the costumes or the darker tone Warner Bros. and DC opt to use, that's not really the main issue. Willem defines it as a lack of character, but more specifically a lack of character growth. He uses Iron Man and Man of Steel as perfect examples of this. Iron Man shows an egotistical Tony Stark, one who is perfectly content with selling weapons for huge profit. Throughout the course of the film, he learns the cost of his actions, and by film's end has dedicated his life to the protection of the very people he endangered before. That's a complete arc, and going forward you understand why Stark does what he does.

Contrast that to Man of Steel, where Willem explains that the Superman fans see at the beginning of the film, even as a child, is essentially the same Superman fans see by film's end. He's intent on saving people despite their mistrust of him, but the filmmakers never allow the viewers any context as to why.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.

Justice League hits theaters on November 11, 2017.
