New Black Lightning Series Coming From Creator Tony Isabella

Tony Isabella, the comic book writer who created Black Lightning in 1977, returns to the character this November with a new, six-issue miniseries from DC which will bring the character back to solo-title glory just as the January premiere of The CW's Black Lightning draws near.

Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands is written by Isabella and drawn by Clayton Henry (Harbinger).

However, DC tells fans, "don't expect a throwback to Isabella's previous time with the character." Jefferson Pierce has gone through some changes.

He's still a teacher who works to be a positive force for his students both in and out of costume, but he's younger than he's ever been before — around 28 years old.

In a departure from the show -- and in a move that is sure to disappoint some fans -- Black Lightning does not yet have children in this version of the mythology.

That is not the end of the changes being made, either; there is something very different about the setting -- and about the series' antagonist, Tobias Whale.

Black Lightning's notorious adversary has gone through some redesigning as well; he's now fit, built like an athlete, and he's no longer an albino. Per DC, "Tobias Whale any smaller of a problem for Jefferson or the city of Cleveland, in which the series is based. He's as ruthless and powerful as ever."

Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands #1 is due in stores on November 1.
