Atari And Sega Genesis Flashback Retro Consoles Will Be Available For Pre-Order Soon

Following the success of the NES Classic Edition, it's clear there's a major pent-up demand for old-school games and hardware. Nintendo has announced the SNES Classic Edition, and yesterday Atari revealed their first new console in 24 years, but the classic console goodness doesn't stop there – this year will also see the release of new Atari Flashback 8 (a separate machine from the newly-announced Ataribox) and Sega Genesis Flashback all-in-one mini consoles from AtGames.

But first, a word of warning – AtGames products have a somewhat mixed reputation. Their Sega and Atari classics tend to be poorly emulated, and a lot of the games pre-installed on their systems are actually lousy shovelware you won't want to play. That said, it seems like AtGames is upping their game this year, offering newly-redesigned consoles and, hopefully, better emulation. Still, don't expect the same level of craftsmanship you'd get from Nintendo's NES and SNES Classic Editions.

Still interested? Well, the Atari Flashback 8 Gold and Sega Genesis Flashback pre-orders will open on July 28 through Amazon, and other major retailers like Target, Walmart and GameStop. Scroll down for a rundown of what each system includes…

Atari Flashback 8 Gold

The all-new Atari Flashback 8 Gold features 120 built-in all-time favorites. Games include legends like Activision's Pitfall! and Taito's Space Invaders, as well as many other all-time Atari 2600 classics like Kaboom!, River Raid, Centipede, and Millipede. Two all new, high performance 2.4ghz wireless controllers, styled after the Atari 2600 originals, are included, as well as two legacy controller ports for optional wired joysticks or paddles. Other all new features for the Atari Flashback 8 Gold include 720p HDMI output, scan line filtering, and a save/pause/rewind feature for every game.

Sega Genesis Flashback

The all-new Sega Genesis Flashback has a stunning new design, reminiscent of the original console, and features 85 built-in games as well as an integrated cartridge port that plays almost all of your favorite Sega Genesis and Mega Drive original cartridges. Built-in all-time favorites include the Sonic series, Mortal Kombat series, Phantasy Star series, and Shining Force series games. Two new high performance 2.4ghz wireless controllers, styled after the Sega Genesis originals, are included, as well as two legacy controller ports for optional wired gamepads. Other new features for the Sega Genesis Flashback include 720p HDMI output, scan line filtering, and a save/pause/rewind feature for every game.

The Atari Flashback 8 and the Sega Genesis Flashback cost $80 apiece, and are expected to hit shelves sometime this September.
