Injustice 2, Mario Kart Big Sales Winners For May

06/19/2017 08:31 pm EDT

The NPD has released its latest sales numbers for May 2016, and, as expected, WB's Injustice 2 made a big impact when it came to dominating the charts.

Consumers spent approximately $542 million on hardware, software and accessories for the month. Even though that's a slight drop from the $610 million sold during May 2016, it's still a pretty high number.

"Spending growth in hardware and accessories was offset by a decline in software spending driven by a lighter new release slate when compared to May 2016," noted NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.

That said, Injustice 2 dominated the top ten list in sales, followed closely behind by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Grand Theft Auto V. Prey, the other notable release for the month of May, notched a fifth place spot on the list. The full top twenty is below:

  1. Injustice 2
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Grand Theft Auto V
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  5. Prey
  6. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  7. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia
  8. NBA 2K17
  9. MLB 17: The Show
  10. Overwatch
  11. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
  12. Horizon Zero Dawn
  13. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  14. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  15. Mass Effect Andromeda
  16. Farpoint
  17. Battlefield 1
  18. Nier: Automata
  19. Minecraft
  20. FIFA 17

"Video game software dollar sales in May 2017 fell 20 percent versus year ago to $271 million," Piscatella noted. "The new release slate of May 2016, led by Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Overwatch and Doom proved a challenging comparable."

The report also noted that Injustice 2 also made its way to number nine on the best-selling games of 2017, and it's likely to stay there a while with some new DLC being added over the next few months, including the just-released Red Hood and the forthcoming Sub-Zero of Mortal Kombat fame. It also notched a first place win when it came to the top ten Xbox One and PlayStation 4 games sold.

Meanwhile, Nintendo continues to be dominant with both Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Rockstar is still riding high with Grand Theft Auto V, despite being out for over a few years now.

We'll see what the month of June brings, though there aren't too many high-profile releases around this time. We'll see how things fare.
