Another Classic Marvel Character Returns In Unworthy Thor

The Unworthy Thor is set to bring the Odinson back to the forefront of Marvel Comics. However, The Unworthy Thor #1 – written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Olivier Coipel - featured not just the original Thor, but another classic Marvel character whose fate is tied to that of the son of Odin.

SPOILERS for Unworthy Thor #1 follow.

The underlying basis of Unworthy Thor has been foreshadowed since the end of Secret Wars. More specifically, it's been foreshadowed since the end of the Thors miniseries that tied into Secret Wars.

The Thors miniseries featured the Battleworld law enforcement organization made up of Thors from across the former multiverse. The main protagonist was the Thunderer Thorlief, the Ultimate Thor. When Secret Wars concluded with the rebirth of the "all-new" Marvel Universe, destroying Battleworld, Thorlief's Mjolnir hammer somehow managed to cross over into the new universe.

Odinson has been without his own Mjolnir since Nick Fury whispered something into the God of Thunder's ear that made him unworthy of the hammer during the events of Marvel's Original Sin event. Thor has been without his mighty weapon ever since, but Fury didn't get out of Original Sin without punishment for his deeds. The Watchers punished Fury for killing Uatu by transforming into the chained being called the Unseen, who – much like the Watcher that Fury murdered – would observe all of the events taking place on Earth, but be unable to involve himself, interfere, or influence those events.

Well, that lasted right up until Unworthy Thor #1.

The Unseen interjected himself into Odinson's business once again. The Unseen, being aware of so much that happens on and around Earth, had seen that Thorlief's hammer landed on Old Asgard. It is the Unseen who alerts Odinson to the other Mjolnir's presence, launching him on a new quest.

"In The Unworthy Thor story Odinson is going to learn certain things about himself," editor Wil Moss told ComicBook.com in a previous interview. "That's stuff that's connected to the Unseen. He's responsible for Odinson's situation. We know that that's what Nick Fury Sr. has become. Odinson's not aware that's who it is. The Unseen definitely has a feeling, not guilt or anything like that, but an obligation, to a degree, for the situation that Odinson's in. He plays a very interesting role in the story, I'll say that. He comes and sets everything off and then that won't be the last we'll see of him."

Based on Moss's comments, it seems we can definitely expect to see more of old Nick Fury as the story of The Unworthy Thor continues to unfold.
