Here's Why Spider-Man: Homecoming Won't Reuse Past Villains

Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming is going with a fresh take on the popular character, and part of that plan involves giving him a new villain to fight that hasn't been seen on screen thus far.

The original Sam Raimi trilogy heavily involved stalwarts like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and Venom, and the newer Amazing Spider-Man films focused on The Lizard, Electro, Rhino, and Green Goblin one more. Going with villains fans have not seen yet was a big part of the strategy for homecoming, which will also feature the Shocker. Producer Amy Pascal spoke to ScreenRant on the set of Homecoming, where she tackled the topic of recycling villains.

"Well, here's the thing: we've recycled a lot. Um, I think there are certain characters I don't think there's anything more to say about them right this minute? And also, you're not doing a story on this, but we're also doing this animated movie, and that has a lot of characters in it, too. Very different, because it's animated. But I think we have to try to be really fresh with it. I mean, I don't know how many more times we can do – at least for now – I don't know how many more times we can do the Green Goblin. I've certainly tried to do it fifty."

It's a smart choice, as the Goblin needs some time away from the spotlight. The studio will most likely take its time with bringing back Venom as well since his first go round stands out in fan's minds as one of the lows of the franchise. The good news is that Spidey's rogue's gallery can more than handle it.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently enjoys a 4.10 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings. You can find the official synopsis below.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast includes Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It also includes Jon Favreau, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, and Hannibal Buress.
