Is Hugh Jackman Hesitating On Retiring As Wolverine?

01/03/2017 05:02 pm EST

In a few months, Hugh Jackman will be hanging up his claws. The Australian actor was thrust into the spotlight when he was cast as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, and his tenure in the role is coming to an end. When Logan hits theaters, Jackman will bid farewell to Wolverine, and fans are already mourning the loss.

But are they grieving too soon? In a recent interview with Variety, Jackman indicated that he was reconsidering his impending X-Men retirement, and it may be because of Ryan Reynolds.

"I'm hesitating," Jackman said, "because I could totally see how that's the perfect fit. But the timing may be wrong."

The fit Jackman is referring to his Wolverine's possible part in Deadpool. The latter mutant made a big screen debut this year thanks to Reynolds. The mouthy merc finally saw his standalone movie hit theaters, and the rated-R affair did gangbusters at the box-office. Not long ago, Reynolds told fans that he wanted to make a standalone Deadpool and Wolverine flick, something which fans began geeking out over hardcore.

Shortly after, rumors began swirling that Deadpool would cameo in Logan to ensure Reynold's dream came true - but don't get too excited. The director of Logan shot down the idea alongside Reynolds and Jackman on Twitter. However, it does not look like the Deadpool star has given up on the idea.

"I have no idea if I can change his mind," Reynolds said, referring to Jackman. "It's the audience: I would exclusively exploit that relationship to get Hugh back for another one."

Of course, it seems unlikely that Jackman will fully go back on his decision to put up the suit. The actor has played the mutant for years now, and age will continue to complicated 20th Century Fox's ability to use the immortal X-Men. However, there is always a chance that Wolverine could pop up in a future Deadpool feature.

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
