Star Trek: Discovery was previously slated for a May debut, but has since been delayed.

"It's important to get it right, and Star Trek is the family jewels," Moonves says. "We're not going to rush it in. There's a lot of post production. But I'm very confident based on what I've seen so far."

CBS is hoping that the first Star Trek television series in more than a decade will convince fans to cough up $5.99 per month for access to the subscription streaming service. The network plans to whet viewers' appetites by airing the premiere episode on CBS. The remainder of Star Trek: Discovery's 13-episode first season will then be available exclusively on CBS All Access.

CBS All Access is currently mostly used by viewers looking to catch up on past episode of currently airing CBS series. CBS is making a play for new subscribers by introducing original content to the service starting with The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight.

Star Trek: Discovery will follow, and CBS plans to sweeten the deal for Star Trek fans by making every episode of Star Trek live-action television ever produced available via CBS All Access.

"There are millions and millions of Trekkies out there," Moonves continued. "We know for a fact that the other versions of Star Trek — there were seven other series, some of them were great and some of them were terrible — they all did really well on Netflix. That gave us great confidence that this was the right choice to put the full court press on All Access."

Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, James Frain, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, and Sam Vartholomeos. Production began in Toronto in January.

Star Trek: Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Fuller was originally intended to be Discovery's showrunner but was forced step down due to commitments to Starz' adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods series. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts have taken over as showrunners.
