Go Go Power Rangers #1 Review - Getting The Series Started In Style

BOOM! Studios is adding another entry into its popular Power Rangers line, but is there really enough room for another Mighty Morphin comic?

Slight spoilers ahead, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.

To answer that question it's best to cover the facts first. Go Go Power Rangers is also set during the Mighty Morphin era, but earlier in the timeline. This series starts during the Ranger's first fight with Goldar and focuses on the meshing personalities of the Rangers from that day forward.

When first announced, it seemed a bit, well, redundant might be the most prudent word, but thankfully it's anything but. This series immediately sets a different tone than it's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cousin, playing up the more jovial aspects of the team's banter and growing friendships. Writer Ryan Parrott displays the perfect amount of self-deprecation but manages to keep the stakes of the threat intact.

Each Ranger gets their chance to shine, with the team even debuting a new recurring character that seems to fit right in (and no, it's not Tommy). Series stalwarts like Ernie, Bulk, and Skull are also thrown into the mix.

Go Go captures the fun and spirit of the Power Rangers franchise, and that is only aided by the beautiful art of Dan Mora and Raul Angulo. The book is rich with vibrant colors and jaw dropping backdrops, including a few renditions of the Megazord that you will want hanging on your wall by issue's end. The tone instantly changes when action flashes over to the Moon Palace, with warmer reds and oranges dominating the palette and Rita's team looking as lethal as ever.

As stated before, the book fully embraces Power Rangers lore with a number of nods to the series delivered with a wink and a smile. In fact, the characterization is so strong you'll probably read it in the voices from the show, and to answer your question that does come from first-hand experience.

Go Go Power Rangers is one of those books that you don't think you need until you read it. Now that it's here, well, here's hoping it never leaves.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.
