Power Rangers Filmmakers Explain Goldar's Gold Redesign

Power Rangers fans undoubtedly recognized the big change in longtime villain Goldar when the initial trailers hit, a far cry from the winged monkey in gold armor that most were used to in the old series. That change was an intentional one, and the filmmakers have now revealed the reason why.

Well, reasons would be a bit more accurate. Power Rangers (which currently holds a 3.48 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings) Production designer Andrew Menzies spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the look that director Dean Israelite was going for, specifically something "Kaiju-like". They wanted to make him an intimidating presence, and the old design just wouldn't allow for that. "Dean and I talked about him being faceless and intimidating and characterless. He's an extension of Rita that's unstoppable."

The inspiration for Goldar's new look came from a chocolate fountain, as his form is constantly shifting and melting, and doesn't have a face. "I think as humans we always search for character in a face, and if it's always shifting and changing, it becomes scary," he says. "If it moved like chocolate and kept flowing, you could never put your finger on it." The team ultimately settled on a look based on ferrofluid, a magnetized liquid that mimics heated gold.

"There's something very beautiful about him," Israelite explains. "All of the negative space that's constantly in Goldar's design feels very eerie, but on the other hand, he's a kinetic sculpture."

(Trini/Yellow Ranger), Sarah Grey (Amanda), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), Emily Maddison (Rebecca), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger).

Power Rangers is set to land in theaters on March 24, 2017.
