Power Rangers: Is Goldar Rita's Zord?

Goldar made his impressive debut in the newest footage from Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot, but a new toy might have revealed something not seen in the trailers, and it puts a whole new spin on Goldar.

Shots of the Goldar action figure have surfaced (via Power Rangers NOW), and in addition to the normal "action features," the figure's torso has some hollow spots in it. That comes in handy since in another photo a cover lifts up to reveal a spot for a Rita Repulsa action figure, which also comes in the box.

That means that instead of Goldar being more of a lieutenant to the villainess seen in the comics and in the original show, he is essentially her Zord. It fits more in line with the look that the film is going for. The more alien designs of the Rangers mixed with the more cobbled together look of the putties would still look odd next to an ape with wings in a gold suit.

The figure is already making the rounds at retail outlets and stands at 20 inches tall. You can see more images of the figure in the gallery.

"Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late."

Power Rangers stars Bryan Cranston (Zordon), Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), David Denman (Sam Scott), Becky G. (Trini/Yellow Ranger), Sarah Grey (Amanda), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), Emily Maddison (Rebecca), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger).

Power Rangers is set to land in theaters on March 24, 2017.
