Star Wars: Jyn Erso, Darth Vader and Death Star Featured On Rogue One EW Covers

The Entertainment Weekly cover story this week is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the next movie in the Star Wars universe, but not the next chapter in the saga. Instead, it's the first standalone film, showing an untold story that fits in the cracks of the episodic "Skywalker Saga." The story, taking place ahead of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, reveals how the Rebel Alliance won their first major victory against the Empire, and stole the Death Star plans.

As such, the dual covers for the story feature two easily recognizable elements: the Death Star itself on one cover, and Darth Vader's dark helmeted visage on the other, both looming behind Jyn Erso. Felicity Jones plays the new character, who gets recruited by the Rebel Alliance on their mission thanks to her father's connection (Mads Mikkelsen) - he's the designer of the powerful laser that the Death Star can use to disintegrate entire planets. The Darth Vader edition is available only at Barnes and Noble book stores.

The cover feature teases stories including an inside look at the story of Rogue One and the way it focuses on the theme of "hope," as a couple of the trailers and TV spots have made abundantly clear, plus a look at Episode VIII and beyond - which likely means just a couple of little soundbites, so don't let your anticipation get too high on those.

"Even though there's a lot of pressure on this movie, it's really impossible to feel it because it reminds you so much of when you grew up and when you felt most comfortable," director Gareth Edwards said in the feature tease. "It's hard to get intimidated when you can constantly look left and see a stormtrooper or look right and see an X-wing. It just feels like you're at home again."

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One is the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
