Star Wars Toy Might Spoil Benicio del Toro's Name in 'The Last Jedi'

Fans have been speculating about Benicio del Toro's role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi ever since the actor was first announced to be joining the cast for the new movie. Details have been scarce about his character, with Rian Johnson only revealing he goes by the initials "D.J." in the film and little else.

After many guesses about what the initials could mean and how del Toro's character will affect the new movie, the mysterious name might have been revealed via a new toy released for Force Friday II.

Potential spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi below.

A fan got ahold of a new Funko POP! Vinyl figure featuring D.J. where the character is wearing a hat with a phrase written in Aurebesh scrawled on it. (For those who don't know, Aurebesh is a common alphabet used in the Star Wars universe for transcribing "Galactic Basic," a common language for various species.)

The phrase on D.J.'s hat translates to say: "Don't Join."

It's an interesting phrase, one that could have a few different meanings in the war between the First Order and the Resistance. It likely plays into the battle itself, in which he and other citizens of Canto Bight are unlikely to choose one side or the other.

The Force Friday II AR campaign recently revealed new information about Maz Kanata, saying that she would put the Resistance in contact with the mysterious D.J., prompting Finn and Rose's mission to the casino world.

Rose actor Kelly Marie Tran spoke about sharing scenes with del Toro, praising his unpredictability.

"When I was onset with that character, I felt like there was a tiger in the room, and I always had to be watching," Tran said. "Like an animal, at any moment he could do something, and I didn't know what."

Del Toro himself wouldn't reveal too much, offering more hints than he was sharing about his character's interactions with Finn and Rose.

"DJ is part of the mission that John Boyega's Finn and Kelly Marie Tran's Rose undertake to the wealthy, gambling resort city of Canto Bight," del Toro said. "But...do they bring him there? Do they capture him there? Do they free him there?"

We'll find out more when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
