Vanity Fair has released four covers featuring the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The cover photos were shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz and show certain aspects of these characters for the first time.

In addition to promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the covers also commemorate the 40th anniversary of the debut of the original Star Wars.

The first cover shows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) on the planet Ahch-To (filmed in Ireland), where Rey found Luke at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The second cover features the film's trio of villains: Stormtrooper Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), dark side Force wielder Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and First Order General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson). This cover offers fans their first look at Phasma without her helmet and their best look yet at Kylo Ren's new scars.

The third cover spotlights the Resistance. Ace pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and former First Order Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) are joined by new character Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), a Resistance maintenance worker.

The final cover is dedicated entirely to General Leia Organa, to honor the late Carrie Fisher who first brought the character to life 40 years ago.

The Leibovitz covers are a follow up to the cast reveal for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which she shot and was released in 2015. Fans can expect to see more photos and get more information about Star Wars: The Last Jedi later in the week.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters Dec. 15, 2017.
