Lucasfilm Exec Sheds Light On The Last Jedi's Newest Planet

We're half a year away from being able to see the latest installment in the Star Wars saga on the big screens, but we're already excited about Rian Johnson's movie.

The teaser trailer for the film promises more action-packed, emotional moments the series has become revered for. While we're going to see some familiar faces return in the struggle between the Resistance and the First Order, The Last Jedi will also contribute some new locations in the vast cosmos of the Star Wars universe.

Some details have come to light about the nefarious "casino" planet we now know is called Canto Bight. John Boyega's Finn and Kelly Marie Gran's Rose will arrive to the location and will apparently collide with Benecio Del Toro's character while there. But other than a few details such as the name, not much else was known about the new place.

The Vanity Fair profile revealed some intriguing new information about Canto Bight, with both Johnson and Lucasfilm Story Group exec Pablo Hidalgo contributing some tidbits.

The piece referred to the location as "The Last Jedi's upscale answer to the Mos Eisley cantina," while Johnson himself called it "a playground, basically, for rich assholes."

The planet will feature an upper class of residents, alien and human alike as revealed by the Vanity Fair photos, who are seem to be unaffected by the conflict infecting the rest of the galaxy.

"What we're going to see in The Last Jedi are some people who have managed to carve out a life for themselves where they can live apart from the galactic struggle," Hidalgo said. "They found a way to live above it or beyond it. There's a class of wealthy that have helped build all sorts of loopholes in society that will always ensure that they'll survive or even thrive no matter what else is happening out there."

The prequel trilogy revealed a different side to the galaxy's higher class, who mostly existed in a political sphere. The Last Jedi will show us a society of wealth outside of politics. It'll be interesting to see how this group lives and how long they can maintain their status unaffected by the First Order's campaign against the Resistance. Will Finn and Rose partake in some of the seedier activities? Such as space horse races?

We'll find out when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
