Star Wars: Mark Hamill Teases Luke Wielding A Lightsaber Again

Though the character sat out for almost the entirety of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker's first appearance in the new trilogy of films resonated with fans and carried a lot of emotional baggage as the character stared at Rey offering him his father's lightsaber.

Mark Hamill portrayed a reluctance to take the item being offered by Daisy Ridley's character, and the actor has since hinted that Luke's views of the Force, the balance between Light and Dark sides, and even the use of lightsabers might have changed in the years since Return of the Jedi.

"You've heard, you know, [Luke] says 'it's time for the Jedi to end,'" Hamill began. "I'm sure his view of the lightsaber, the weapon of choice, must have changed as well."

But even if Luke is now reluctant to wield the ancient weapon in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he might not have a choice. Luke has exiled himself and not partaken in the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order, but Rey might end up bringing him back into the fight.

When Fandango asked how it feels to pick a lightsaber up again, Hamill simply responded with a chuckle: "It's frightening."

While it seems inevitable, Hamill added a caveat to his previous statement.

"And who knows? Do I pick one up again or don't I?"

With the First Order and the Knights of Ren attempting to hunt the hermit Jedi down, it doesn't seem like he'll have much of a choice.

But we'll find out for sure when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
