A Doctor Who Companion May Return For The 2017 Christmas Special

Many fans are loving the current season of Doctor Who, with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) galavanting around space and time with his newest companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie). And although Capaldi - as well as showrunner Steven Moffat - is expected to bid farewell to the series during the 2017 Christmas special, it appears that he could have another companion by his side when he does so.

Nerdist.com is hinting that Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Capaldi's companion for Series 9 and 10, could return to the series in the currently-untitled Christmas episode. As of right now, the evidence supporting Coleman's return is currently somewhat slim, as it is based more off of a reported filming location than any sort of actual casting. But, for those familiar with Clara's arc on the show, the location in question is sure to raise some eyebrows.

"Eddie's Diner got booked by the BBC for filming in July for 2 days," revealed a recent tweet. "Given the fact that my friend asked the owner about Doctor Who, and did his Doctor Who photos in the Diner, I'm sure that he means Doctor Who. I only got the date of July… No specific date was given."

Eddie's Diner - which is located in Cardiff, Wales - has played a significant role on Doctor Who in two separate instances. The retro diner was visited by the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companions in the Series 6 episode 'The Impossible Astronaut'.

But secondly - and most relevant to Coleman's return - the location played heavily into the Series 9 finale 'Hell Bent.' In the episode, Clara and Me (Maisie Williams) had earned their own TARDIS, which was outfitted to look like the inside of Eddie's Diner.

It's unclear how significantly Eddie's Diner - and Clara's return - could factor into the Christmas special. But the show does have a trend of prominent companions helping say goodbye to their soon-to-regenerate Doctor. David Tennant's Tenth Doctor toured around the universe to say goodbye to his past companions, while Smith's Eleventh Doctor was visited by a hallucination of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

With that in mind, here's hoping that the show continues the trend, and gives fans one more moment between Clara and the Twelfth Doctor.

Doctor Who airs Saturdays on BBC America.
