Preacher: Joseph Gilgun Explains Cassidy's Season 2 State Of Mind

Preacher will hit the road in its second season and perhaps no one involved is as excited as the Irish vampire Cassidy, played by Joseph Gilgun.

According to Gilgun, Cassidy has high hopes for this trip with new best friends, Jess (Dominic Cooper) and Tulip (Ruth Negga), but the road trip may not be quite everything he's hoping for.

"I think he thinks it's gonna be this great rock and roll adventure trip but, you know, that's the Hollywood version," Gilgun tells ComicBook.com during a visit to the New Orleans set of Preacher. "We had these meetings where we wanted to talk about injecting reality into this mission. Like a mission like this, especially with people like Tulip and Cassidy, who do nothing but run away from their problems, they have a f***ing backlog of issues to deal with. Going back to New Orleans is a problem for Tulip, it's a problem for Cassidy. So s**t just gets in the way, inevitably life finds a way to f**k things up."

"He's always pushing the boundaries," Gilgun continues. "This is an opportunity to push the boundaries again. With these new people who he really quite likes, you know? He loves Tulip and finds Jesse fascinating."

Cassidy was born a Catholic in Ireland. Over his more than a century of life as a vampire, he's taken a different perspective on religion. Gilgun says Cassidy "initially thought it was complete f***ing nonsense, like ridiculous even and a complete waste of time. And I think that's partly what fascinated Cassidy about Jesse, that Jesse's just desperately trying."

Of course, meeting actual angels and even killing an archangel could affect anyone's view on religion, and Cassidy has as much of ax to grind with the Almighty as Jesse does.

"Everybody bloody leaves him constantly. He f***s everything up eventually anyway. I mean, he's not great, is he? But eventually, everyone dies and leaves him. He just outlives people," Gilgun says, explaining what Cassidy might say to God if Jesse actually succeeds in his mission. "He feels abandoned by God if anything. I've spoken about that before and that's definitely something I play up in this search for God. I think Cassidy, given the opportunity, would, you know, just like 'What's the f***ing deal, man? 120 years of this s**t. Where have you been? Where have you f***ing been? I've seen it all and it's been terrible as well.'"

Cassidy's vampire state also means there are some special considerations that there are special needs that the trio need to take into consideration on their trip.

"At some stage, they've robbed a blood bank, and Tulip's maternal nature is sort of going, 'Right, we need to think of something here. Because this kind of s**t happens on a regular basis. You'll occasionally lose an arm or something. We need something.' So, I think when we'd gone to go and get blood, she's had common sense enough to grab a surplus and sort of refrigerate it," Gilgun continues. "They do have a set plan so he's not like, just having to merc someone every f***ing week, you know?"

Fans will see how that works out as Preacher season two continues. The season premieres June 25 at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.
